DO YOU WANT TO BE THE NEXT BIG THING IN ONLINE MAKEUP TUTORIALS? KEEP READING...
So, you want to know how to start your own successful, heck even viral, makeup channel? There are quite a few young and successful Youtubers who have made millions from their makeup tutorial brand and if you have the right foundations (see what I did there? huh), you can make a pretty penny too.
Here are the top ways that the now famous and viral makeup artists started their online presence and built a devoted empire of followers that eventually became paying customers. Many of the smarter makeup artists were creating income via several streams before they even become viral sensations and you can too.
WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT ALL VIRAL SUCCESS STORIES HAVE IN COMMON?
It is pretty much impossible to go viral if you don't have amazing quality content. Sure you will get some views, but people don't share mediocre work.
You may be one of the most talented artists out there, but if the video quality is lacking and people can't see the detail or understand the steps, they won't share or give your content the thumbs up.
There are a few simple steps to ensure your video tutorials are great quality and eye catching to your audience.
CONSISTENCY - you need to choose a consistent style, this will become part of your signature look. Everything about your videos creates a visual theme and people will either love it or be put off by it. Either way, it's very important.
BACKGROUND - Choose a background that you will use each and every time you create a video. Some artists use their bedroom and you can see their bed in the background (often with a super cute and lovable pet chilling out too), other artists hang a shimmery glitter fabric background that sparkles when their lighting hits it. Whatever you choose, make sure the background is clutter free and pretty, but not so pretty that it takes their attention away from your gorgeous face.
LIGHTING - Ensure your lighting is flattering, bright and consistent. A lot of youtubers invest in lighting kits or large ring lights to create that professional and consistent look. You can pick up professional lighting for under $150 or you can DIY your own ring light for under $50 and still get great results. Using artificial light, rather than natural light in videos, gives you more control and also allows you to record videos at anytime of the day or night, I know a few makeup artists who record at night because their children are asleep and the house is quieter! (while our children nap, we take over the world).
CAMERA QUALITY - it is important to have high quality videos that are view-able in high definition, I always click away from blurry or too-dark videos right away (and it's TOTALLY ok to fill the frame with your face, the more detail the better).
DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT - When it comes to being consistent, the easiest way to ensure this is that you start properly. Starting up with a semi professional set up just to save a few $$$ means you will a) not gain the momentum you want because your results won't be amazing, and b) you will create inconsistency when you upgrade your setup and that's not great for virality.
WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?
It's a good idea to take a few short sample videos and ask your friends (and even reach out to other's in the industry that you trust) which they think suits your style better.
My absolute favourite makeup channels use a plain white background and you can easily do this by setting up against a wall in your home or purchasing a simple white backdrop kit like this one from Amazon, which includes all backdrop stands and continuous lighting that you need to create great professional videos: Fancierstudio 1000watt Lighting Kit Black White Muslin Backdrop and background stand kit By Fancierstudio K105BW
You could also use a kit like the one above and add your own fabric from the hobby store (shimmery fabrics or sequined fabrics look pretty trendy), you can add fairy lights or icicle drop lights to this backdrop to create a lovely effect as well. The possibilities are endless.
Once you have an idea of what your style and brand identity will look like, you can start creating a visual identity for yourself online. (what will your logo look like, will it be feminine and soft or ultra modern and fun?).
This guide is about creating a successful Youtube channel, but part of creating a successful channel involves sharing across all social media platforms. You will also want to create an Instagram page and Facebook page as well.
For each video tutorial you upload to Youtube, you should create a highlight reel or snippet for Instagram. Have a link to your youtube channel as the link in your Instagram profile and direct viewers to that link each and every time you post on IG.
You should start thinking about a source for high quality photographs for in between video posts on IG as well, Oh Tilly Styled Stock have amazing makeup images available. You want your photography quality to be high and consistent, just the same as your videos.
WHAT STEPS CAN I START TODAY?
- Always be consistent, right from the very start.
- Choose an amazing video backdrop that will become a part of your signature style.
- Invest in a high quality lighting setup so that you control the light and look of your videos.
- Make sure your camera is up to scratch (you can capture high quality videos with most modern smartphones, but never with the front facing camera).
- Decide on your brand's visual identity including colours, photography, logo and video styling. Make sure you're putting forward the best visual identity possible in every aspect of your online persona.
- Start creating and invite all your friends to like, comment and share!
GO AHEAD, START TODAY. THERE'S NOTHING STOPPING YOU NOW!
